Reducing Overhead While Improving Service

Reducing Overhead While Improving Service

Client:
A state governmental district agency was experiencing annual budget cuts in all areas due to declining tax revenues. Compounding the situation was the legal obligation of the agency to travel to visit the private citizens it was required to serve. The agency found itself unable to meet its legal obligations with the reduced travel budget.

Goal:
Reduce the annual mileage expense by 20%, while not negatively impacting the agency’s ability to serve its constituent groups.

Results:
Using some basic Lean Six Sigma tools such as process maps, FMEA and applied statistics, the eMRI-led team was able to reengineer the client assignment process, so that case workers were assigned clients geographically situated to minimize travel time and expense. The cost for travel (mileage) was reduced by 30%, generating a significant portion of the required 20% savings in the department-wide travel budget.

Savings:
$35,000.
